Weight Management

Unwanted weight gain is a complex problem that is contributed by social, behavioral, cultural and physiological factors. Excessive body fat is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability, a problem that seems to be getting worse globally.

Most weight loss programs today focus either on quick solutions that do not have long-term effects or on calorie counting diets which have proven to be impractical in the real world. In fact, an estimated 95% of all people who lose weight on a diet, gain it back. Most start on a diet and gave up feeling discouraged when they don’t lose much fat, even though they may have lost 5 kilos of water weight. Some may have started on a diet and lost weight, but gained back more weight, and then gave up in discouragement. Or some have compulsively eaten various miracle weight loss diets only to watch their weight fluctuate like a yo-yo.

Chronic Disease Management

Chronic diseases are defined broadly as conditions that last 1 year or more and require ongoing medical attention or limit activities of daily living or both. Chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. In Singapore, chronic diseases accounted for 83% of all deaths in 2002 while in Malaysia, chronic diseases accounted for 71% of all deaths in 2002. (World Health Organisation estimates). Almost eight out of 10 adults in the world (79%) has at least one chronic disease while five out of 10 (50%) has two or more conditions (CDC).

That’s the bad news. The good news is there are three main culprits: Poor diet, smoking, sedentary lifestyle. CDC also estimates that by eliminating these three risk factors, you can prevent 80% of heart disease, 40% of cancer and 80% of diabetes.

Smoking Cessation

Smoking is a major health hazard. There is now an exhaustive body of evidence —including hundreds of epidemiological, experimental, pathological, and clinical studies — to demonstrate that smoking increases the smoker’s risk of death and illness from a wide variety of diseases.

Most smokers accept the fact that smoking is harmful, but many think of this risk as something like a game of roulette: They believe that each cigarette they smoke is like placing a bet. The “prize” is a heart attack, lung cancer, or some other disease. If your “number’ comes up, you’ve had it, but if you are “lucky” and your number never comes up, you may avoid the hazardous effects of smoking altogether and live to a ripe old age totally unaffected by your smoking habit.

Nevertheless, it has been found that three out of four smokers would like to quit. Five out of six say they would not start smoking in the first place, if they had the choice to make over again. But to quit smoking isn’t easy. Studies have shown that many successful quitters failed in their first attempts to quit.
